Laura Florand is the bestselling author of Blame It on Paris. Bestselling within her family, that is-she expects at least half of them to buy the book, if only so they can protest that she made every word about them up and none of it is true.
She received her B.A. in French from a small Southern university called Sewage, and she is not making this up! Okay, the official abbreviation for the State University of West Georgia is U.W.G., not S.U.W.G., but there was a certain small town reaction when West Georgia College got ideas of grandeur and changed its name.
All small town smart-aleckiness aside, she still owes a debt to all the educators and administrators at this university, who gave her such unstinting support and attention during her years there.
Not sure how to support herself on a B.A. in French in a small, landlocked town in Georgia, she applied for and won a Fulbright to Tahiti. There she did, indeed, study Tahitian dance. And she can, indeed, shake her hips. Her performance group is Aloha Makana. And yes, you can see pictures of her shaking her hips on their site: www.alohamakana.com. She would like to say she is one of the beautiful, exotic-looking, long black-haired dancers pictured, but, sadly, she’s not. Her hair is not blond, though. Chestnut. Really.
Not sure how to support herself on a B.A. in French and the ability to shake her hips (oh, if only!), she pursued graduate studies at Duke University. No, she didn’t choose anything more practical-still French. A graduate stipend in the humanities would not be considered earning a living by most, but we never said she was a realistic child.
She got her Master’s in French from Duke University. She had other plans for Duke University, but read the book.
Not sure how to support herself on a Master’s in French, she took up what everyone knows to be an effortless, quick, and easy way to fame and fortune: she wrote a book.
Okay, we have to admit. She is making that up about the effortless, quick, easy, fame, and fortune.
